How this site is funded

Affiliate disclosure

Alder & Rime is reader-funded. Some links here are intended to earn a commission, and none of them change what we recommend.

The short version

Some of the links on this site are shopping links, and our intention is for some of them to earn a commission from the retailer. Where that happens, the retailer pays it out of their own margin — you pay exactly the same price either way.

That is the entire commercial relationship. Nobody pays us for a review, for a placement, or for a kind word, and no merchant sees an article before it goes live.

Which links earn us money

None of them, today. Alder & Rime has not been approved for a single affiliate programme, so at the time of writing no link anywhere on this site earns us anything.

That is a matter of sequence, not principle. The retailer programmes we intend to apply to — Select Saunas, Sauna Kit Co, SaunaKits.com, Sweaty Yeti, Sun Home Saunas, Chilly GOAT and PlungeChill — each require a live site with published guides before they will review an application. We have verified their terms. We have not joined them, and we hold no publisher ID with any of them.

When the first application is approved, that retailer is named here on the day it happens, before a single link to it is tagged. Until a retailer appears in this list, a link to it is making us nothing.

Which links do not

Most outbound links on this site are citations, not shopping links, and they earn nothing. Manufacturer manuals and spec sheets, installation and electrical documentation, and retailers we link purely because they publish a specification worth quoting all fall into this group.

Several brands we recommend often — Harvia, HUUM, Thermory and Penguin Chillers among them — run no affiliate programme at all. When we point you at them, there is no commission involved anywhere in the chain.

Why we never print a price

Prices in this category move constantly. Retailers run recurring site-wide sale events, freight and surcharge lines move on their own, and dealers tell you plainly that what they post is the lowest they are permitted to advertise. A figure we printed once would be wrong within weeks, and a wrong price is worse than no price.

So we band the category — entry, mid, serious, flagship — and send you to the retailer for the number that is true today. If you have ever wondered whether a missing price means we are hiding an affiliate markup: we are not, and this is why.

How this affects what we recommend

It does not, and the structure of the site is the argument for that. Specifications are checked against the manufacturer's own documentation rather than copied from another blog. Where installers and manufacturers genuinely disagree, you get both positions and the reasoning instead of a verdict.

The most useful sentence we write is often the one that talks you out of a purchase. "You don't need this yet" is an answer we give frequently, and it earns us nothing.

On your health, plainly

Nothing on this site is medical advice. Sauna and cold-water immersion both put real load on the cardiovascular system, and guidance written for a general reader cannot clear you individually. If you are pregnant, have a heart or blood-pressure condition, or take medication that affects heat tolerance or circulation, talk to your clinician before using either — our contraindications guide exists to map exactly who should be asking first.

Our health-claims rule is the same discipline as our pricing rule: we state what the evidence actually shows, we cite it, and where it is genuinely unsettled we say so rather than rounding up to a promise.

Cookies and tracking

Once a programme is live, clicking one of those links may set a cookie that tells the retailer we referred you. That is how a commission is attributed. We do not receive your name, your payment details, or anything else about your order.

See our privacy policy for how the site itself handles data.
